Let's cut through the job-title fog. When you search for "computer hardware engineer," you get a vague government definition: someone who designs and develops computer systems and components. That tells you almost nothing about what a Tuesday actually looks like. So let's start with a specific, grounded picture of the work, the tools, and the people you'd be spending your days with.

The short version: you make physical things that process data

A computer hardware engineer designs, tests, and troubleshoots the physical parts of a computer - the circuit boards, processors, memory modules, storage controllers, and the interconnects that tie them together. You are not the person fixing laptops at the local repair shop, and you are not the software developer writing the applications that run on top. You sit in the middle: you build the silicon and the boards that software has to run on.

The job is split into two major camps. The first is chip design - working at a company like Intel, AMD, NVIDIA, or Qualcomm to design a processor or a chipset. This work is almost entirely done on a computer, using hardware description languages (HDL) like Verilog or VHDL. These are programming languages, but instead of telling a computer what to do, you're describing how millions of transistors should be wired together. You write your code, run simulations to check that the logic is correct, and then hand off the design to a team
