Chapter 1: Why Most Approaches Fail — and What Actually Works

You have been told a lie. Not a malicious lie, but a convenient one. The lie is that budget travel fails because you do not try hard enough, or because you are not clever enough, or because you have not found the secret trick that the influencers are hiding from you. The truth is far simpler and far more uncomfortable: most budget travel advice is built on anecdotes, not evidence, and the methods it recommends are actively working against you.

Think about the last trip you tried to plan. If you are like most of the people I have worked with, you did what the internet told you to do. You browsed a dozen blogs listing "10 ways to save on flights." You installed a price-tracking app that promised to alert you when prices dropped. You told yourself you would "just be flexible" about dates and destinations. And then, despite all of that, you ended up overpaying for a flight that connected through two cities you did not want to visit, staying at a mediocre hostel that was somehow not cheaper than a budget hotel, and coming home with a credit card bill that made the whole trip feel like a bad trade.
