Chapter 1: Why Most Approaches Fail — and What Actually Works

The problem is not that you aren't good enough. The problem is not that you lack experience. The problem is not that the market is unfair, although sometimes it is. The problem is more fundamental than any of that: The application process is a lottery, and you have been buying tickets, not building wealth.

Think about the last time you applied for a job. You spent an hour or more tailoring your resume to match the keywords in the posting. You wrote a cover letter that you rephrased three times. You hit submit. And then, what did you do? You moved on to the next posting and repeated the process. You are treating a complex decision process like a volume game. More tickets, better odds, right?

That logic is broken on a structural level. Consider the numbers. Large companies with strong employer brands will often receive over a thousand applications for a single engineering or marketing role. Do you think a human reads all of them? No. They have trivago for resumes. They use Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) that filter out a large percentage of applications before a pair of human eyes ever sees them. Of the ones that pass the filter, a recruiter or hiring manager might spend less than ten seconds on the first scan.
