Chapter 1: Why Most Approaches Fail — and What Actually Works

You have probably been told that the problem is your self-esteem. That you need to love yourself more, or repeat affirmations until you believe them, or visualize a confident version of yourself stepping into the room. You have read the articles with titles like "Own Your Power" and "Stop Being a Pushover." You have tried. And yet, when the moment actually arrives - when your colleague interrupts you in a meeting, or your sister makes a passive-aggressive comment about your parenting, or the barista gets your order wrong - you still hear yourself say it.

"Sorry."

Or you do not say the word, but you do the physical equivalent. You shrink your shoulders. You look down. You add a nervous laugh at the end of your sentence before you trail off. You spend twenty seconds prevaricating before you ask for something that should take five. You soften the message until the message is gone.

This is not a self-esteem problem. If it were, the affirmations would have worked. The visualization would have worked. You would have thought yourself into a different posture by now. The reason you are still stuck is that you are treating a behavioral problem with a cognitive solution. You are trying to feel your way into acting differently, when in fact you need to act your way into a different reality.
