Chapter 1: Why Most Approaches Fail — and What Actually Works

You have asked for testimonials. Maybe you even begged. What did you get? "Great product, highly recommend." "Wonderful team to work with." "They did a good job." Are these nice? Yes. Are they useful? Not in the sense that matters most. They would not be useful to you, if the roles were reversed. If you were a prospect, reading that someone had a "great experience," would you be moved to spend a significant amount of money? You would not. That is the fundamental problem with the common approach. It treats social proof as a bin to collect things in, rather than as a tool to build belief with.

Why does this happen? Because we, as business owners and salespeople, tend to treat the request for a testimonial as an afterthought. We send the generic email: "Having you as a client means the world to us; if you have a moment, would you mind sending a few words we can put on our site?" We are afraid to ask for too much. We are afraid to sound demanding. We are afraid to bother the client. So we take whatever generic platitude we get, upload it to the website, and call it a day.

The real reason you struggle to close sales with social proof is that you are operating under what I call the Wisdom of the Crowd myth. This is the assumption that a large quantity of positive voices
