The Greyhound had the sour upholstery smell of every bus she’d ever taken away from here, and Maeve pressed her forehead to the cool glass, watching the coastline resolve itself out of the inland fog. It was a particular kind of gray, this coast—not the steel gray of cities, but a wet, living gray, the color of a fish’s flank just before it turns. She’d forgotten how the light here didn’t fall so much as seep, soaking into the clapboard houses and the granite breakwater until everything looked waterlogged, including the people. A man in a slicker was hauling a trap up the public dock, his movements slow and deliberate, as if the air itself had the viscosity of brine. She watched him until the bus pulled past the harbor and her own reflection replaced his, a ghost superimposed on the town she’d sworn she’d never come back to.

The call had come three days ago. Dr. Alma Reyes, the night nurse, her voice a thin cord of professional calm frayed at the edges. Your father’s had a bad fall, Dr. Callahan. He’s asking for you. Not a request, Maeve had noted. An invocation. She’d stood in her lab at Scripps, surrounded by the sterile click of monitoring equipment and the reassuring geometry of data readouts, and felt the pull of it—a tide that had been going out for fifteen years, now turning, dragging her back through the salt-scoured channels of her own
