Chapter 1: Why Most Approaches Fail — and What Actually Works

You have tried the sticker chart. You have taken away the video games. You have explained, calmly and kindly, why it is not okay to interrupt, to shove, to mock his sister, to say "whatever" and roll his eyes. You have done the countdowns, the warnings, the "one more chance." And yet here you are, standing in the kitchen, your voice getting tighter, and your nine-year-old is staring at you with that specific look that says he has already checked out of the conversation.
