You have probably been here: your child screams in the cereal aisle because you refused the sugary cereal. You feel eyes on your back. Your face goes hot. You are embarrassed, so you do what you were taught to do - you threaten. "If you don't stop crying, you will never get any cereal again." The threat works. The screaming stops. You get out of the store with a red-faced, puffy-eyed child and a cart full of groceries. You feel like you have won the battle.
But you haven't. You have just lost the war in a way that is almost invisible.
Here is the first thing you need to understand about punishment: it produces quick results with zero effort. That is its trap. Timeouts, losing screen time, being sent to the room, the confiscation of toys - these all work in the moment because they scare a child into compliance. The problem is that they do not build anything durable. They do not teach a child how to modulate their anger. They do not teach a child how to tolerate frustration or resist the pull of immediate gratification. They simply teach a child that when they feel an overwhelming emotion, they need to suppress it immediately because an external force threatens to take something away.
