Chapter 1: Why Most Approaches Fail — and What Actually Works

You have tried being more empathetic. You have tried being more direct. You have tried the feedback sandwich, the radical candor, and the "just ask clarifying questions" approach. And after all of it, the same thing happens. The person across the table nods, takes your input, and then does the exact opposite of what you asked. Or they get defensive about a suggestion you carefully phrased as a simple option. Or they smile, say "got it," and then never think about it again. You conclude that they are difficult, or emotional, or resistant to feedback. You are wrong.

Here is what actually happened in those moments: you were not speaking the same language. Not English and Spanish - that would be easier.
