Chapter 1: Why Most Approaches Fail — and What Actually Works
Let's be honest about what usually happens. You buy a house, or you finally get sick of looking at the same sad patch of dirt, and you decide to do something about it. You start with good intentions. You go to the nursery on a sunny Saturday. You load the cart with things that look healthy and colorful. You come home, dig a few holes, put them in the ground, water them, and call it a project.
Then August arrives. The mulch has washed out of the bed and onto the sidewalk. The cute little shrubs you planted are now either dead, or they are consuming the entire front of the house like something out of a horror movie. The perennials you chose by their flower color are bloomed out after two weeks, and now you have a bed of green mush. You are out another $150 at the garden center for replacement plants, and you swear to yourself that next year will be different.
Next year is different. Next year, you spend more money, plant more things, and then you get a new job, or it rains for three weeks straight, or a heat wave hits, and the cycle repeats.
Most people who struggle with landscaping are not lazy. They are not lacking in taste. They are not even lacking in information. They are drowning in information. There are a million videos on how to plant a tree.
