Chapter 1: Why Most Approaches Fail — and What Actually Works

You have climbed for months, maybe years. You have watched the technique videos, listened to the guy who sends 5.13s talk about "just climbing," and tried the hangboard routine you found on a blog. You have gotten stronger, but your grade has not moved in six months. You are not alone. The majority of climbers who make it past the very first few months of "just having fun" hit this same wall, and the standard advice is why they stay there.

The most common piece of wisdom in climbing is also the most damaging to your progress: "Just climb more." It sounds simple, even profound. It is wrong. If you have been climbing at least once or twice a week for a year, climbing more of the same climbs is not a path to improvement. It is a path to a very strong floor and a very low ceiling. You are not practicing climbing; you are practicing your current habits, including your flaws. You are building a palace of repetition on a foundation of uncorrected errors. This is the primary failure mode for the motivated adult climber: you have replaced deliberate practice with high-volume recreation, mistaking sweat and effort for effective training.
