Chapter 1: Why Most Approaches Fail — and What Actually Works
You have probably been told that breaking an addictive pattern is a war of will. You hear that you need to be stronger, to resist the urge, to white-knuckle your way through the cravings until they eventually go quiet. You have been told that it is a matter of character, that staying away from the substance or behavior for thirty or sixty or ninety days means you are healed, and that a relapse means you are a failure. This common wisdom is not only unhelpful, it is scientifically backwards. It is the reason so many motivated, intelligent people stay trapped in cycles that they understand perfectly well yet cannot seem to break.
Consider the typical experience. You have identified the problem: you use your phone for two hours before bed. Or you turn to food, alcohol, gambling, or pornography the moment a certain kind of stress hits. You have read the articles. You know that habits are triggered by cues and followed by rewards. And so you try to use that knowledge. You try to distract yourself. You try the app block, the new gym membership, the sober month. Sometimes it works for a while, and you feel proud, in control. Then a hard day comes, a trigger you did not plan for, and you are right back where you started, only now you have the added weight of disappointment and the feeling that something is wrong with you.
