Chapter 1: Why Most Approaches Fail — and What Actually Works

You are not losing it. You are not weaker than everyone else who seems to be moving on. And the reason you feel stuck despite all your efforts is not a personal failing. It is a systematic one. The advice you were given is wrong. Not just unhelpful - actively, measurably wrong. And if you have been trying to follow it without success, you are not the one who is broken. The map you were handed does not show the terrain you are actually walking.

Let's be specific about what that map gets wrong. The most common wisdom you have likely encountered falls into three categories. The first is the "time heals" mantra. You hear it from well-meaning family and friends, and it is the most pernicious lie in the grief industry. It is pernicious because it is not entirely false. The acute, stabbing pain of loss does soften with time for most people. But the second part of the problem - the question of who you are now - does not heal passively. It does not even get addressed by time. A broken leg heals with time if it is set correctly. If you never set the bone, it heals crooked and leaves you with a permanent limp that flares up every time you put weight on it. Identity after loss is the same. Without active intervention, the fracture site calcifies in whatever shape you happen to hold
