Chapter 1: Why Most Approaches Fail — and What Actually Works
You were promoted because you were exceptional. You wrote the most elegant code, closed the most complex deals, produced the most rigorous analysis. You were the person the organization turned to when things were broken. And then, in recognition of that brilliance, you were given a team. And now, you are likely in one of two places. You are either drowning in your own work while trying to manage others, or you have delegated everything and feel like you have lost your identity and your value. The common wisdom tells you that the problem is a lack of soft skills. It tells you to be more empathetic, to listen more, to give more feedback. It hands you a list of competencies like 'communication' and 'strategic thinking' and tells you to get better at them. So you do. You read the blog posts. You attend the workshops. You try to be more 'present' in your one-on-ones and more 'visionary' in your team meetings. And yet, nothing seems to change. The team still waits for you to make the final call. The bottlenecks still happen at your desk. You still work ten-hour days, except now you are also accountable for other people's output.
