You have probably watched the video. The one where a cheerful presenter holds a cell phone up to a poorly lit picture of a switch, pulls out a screwdriver, and has a new dimmer installed in under four minutes. No voltage tester in sight. No mention of which screw is the common terminal. The video ends with a smile and a bright new room, and you are left thinking, "If they can do it, I can do it."
So you try. You turn off the breaker named "kitchen" on a hunch that it is also the one for the hall light. You take the old switch off the wall, and in the dim light of a headlamp, you pause. There are three screws, and on the old switch, only two are used. But you had bought a dimmer with a green wire and two black ones. The presenter's switch had only two wires. Yours has three.
