Chapter 1: Why Most Approaches Fail — and What Actually Works

Every field has its version of the advice that sounds good but does nothing. For careers, it is a whole library of it. You have been told to follow your passion, to network more, to build your personal brand, to say yes to every opportunity, to stay late and make yourself indispensable. You have probably done these things. And yet, here you are, with a job that doesn't feel like a career, a trajectory that feels more like a treadmill, and a nagging suspicion that you are doing the homework assignment wrong.

You are not doing it wrong. You are doing what you were told. The problem is that the instructions are broken.

Let's be precise about why. Most career advice focuses on tactics - isolated actions you take once, or occasionally, with the hope that they will unlock a door. Update your resume to pass the ATS. Network with two people a week. Learn one new skill this quarter. These are not bad actions. In fact, some of them are necessary. The problem is that they are not a system. They are like buying a hammer, a saw, and a level, and then being told that now you are a carpenter. You have the tools, but you have no blueprint. You do not know what to build, in what order, or how the pieces connect. So you keep buying more tools - a new course, a better resume
